Arena of Valor takes the well-worn principles of the multiplayer online battle arena — or MOBA — game and adapts them expertly for mobile devices. The result is proof that this highly technical format can actually thrive outside of the PC and console space, as the depth of characters, strategies, and team compositions are quite robust. Two teams of five compete with one another in themed arenas. The ultimate goal is to destroy or otherwise bypass a series of towers on the way to destroying the opponent team's base. But characters don't start off powerful enough to do that on their own, and so the push and pull of the game consists of splitting time between fighting computer-controlled monsters and pushing back the enemy team pushing at your own towers.

The characters make or break a MOBA, and Arena of Valor has over a hundred to choose from. Each character can fit into one of six familiar roles. Whether you prefer to run support for your teammates, deal heavy damage and then quickly disappear, or fling magic from a distance, there are plenty of different variants to choose from — and many of them make use of familiar character archetypes in new and refreshing ways. It also helps that this is one of the least intimidating MOBAs on the market. While there's a high skill ceiling for players that are looking to truly excel at the game, it's easy to jump into Arena of Valor and find some success right from the start. A streamlined tutorial does a strong job of teaching the fundamentals, and new features and characters tend to unlock at a steady clip. Players have access to a range of different game modes, so you can easily find a match that suits the type of play that you're looking for in the moment.

That said, the sheer scale of modes to choose from can seem overwhelming if this is your first time playing a MOBA — and possibly even if you're a pro. But the sense of discovery is part of the fun. Specialized game modes will have you doing everything from using hooks to try and raid the other team's flying ship to going one-on-one against another player in a death match to squaring off in teams of ten on a massive battlefield. No matter what mode you're playing in, you'll be collecting currency that you can use to unlock new characters or customization options. While you can spend real world money to speed up the process, anything that can have an effect on the actual gameplay experience can be earned with enough time and patience. Fortunately, the actual moment-to-moment comment should be enough to encourage you to come back for more.
